Memorial Day Camping at The Oaks: Fishing Contest, Bingo and a DJ
Memorial Day weekend at The Oaks Campground in Munith, about 50 minutes from Ann Arbor, centers on one packed Saturday: kids’ bingo, tie-dye, a fishing contest, corn hole, bike and golf cart parades and a DJ. This year’s schedule is on the Oaks events page.
What a typical Memorial Day Saturday looks like
Here’s how last season’s Saturday ran. Times can shift a little each year.
Morning: bingo and tie-dye
At 11 AM, kids’ candy bar bingo fills the pavilion, with candy bars as prizes. At noon, the whole family can make tie-dye shirts together; shirts are sold at the camp store. Both are easy ways for first-time families to meet the neighbors on the first big weekend of the summer.
Afternoon: corn hole and fishing
Adults play a blind-draw corn hole tournament while the kids fish.
- 1 PM adult corn hole tournament, $5 per person
- 1 to 2 PM fishing contest, with prizes for the most fish, the biggest and the smallest
Register about 10 minutes early. Worms and tackle are sold at the store; there are no loaner rods, so bring your own. Kids do best fishing off the dock.
Late afternoon: parades
Kids decorate their bikes for the best-decorated bike contest and bike parade, then the golf carts take a turn in the golf cart parade. Golf cart rentals are available at the store; your own electric cart needs a cart pass and proof of insurance.
Evening: DJ at the pavilion
The evening ends with a DJ at the pavilion (last season, DJ Dave from 7 to 10 PM). Families dance, kids play on the lawn nearby, and neighbors who met at the fishing contest catch up. Things wind down before quiet hours start at 11.
The rest of the weekend
A food truck came in on Sunday last season. The rest of the time is yours: 120 acres of trails for hiking, mountain biking and golf carts, the fishing lake, and Waterloo Recreation Area right next door. The Portage Lake public boat launch is about nine minutes away if you bring a boat.
Book early for Memorial Day
Memorial Day kicks off the season and fills early, so book ahead. Our rates are dynamic, so holiday weekends cost more than ordinary weekends and waterfront sites cost more than standard ones. Choose your dates on the Oaks rates page to see your price. If your dates are flexible, the weekend right after Memorial Day is one of the lower-priced weekends of the summer.
Good to know before you come
- Quiet hours run 11 PM to 8 AM, and golf carts park for the night at dark.
- Kids and bikes are back at the site by dusk.
- Outside firewood isn’t allowed in Michigan; buy firewood at the camp store.
- You must be 25 or older to rent a site.
A note on hookups: The Oaks has water and electric (50 amp on short-term sites, 30 amp on seasonal), plus a gray-water drain and a honey-wagon service. There are no full-hookup or pull-through sites, so plan your tanks for a long weekend. Sites here are some of the largest in our parks, and big rigs fit well.

Getting to The Oaks
The Oaks is in Munith, next to the Waterloo Recreation Area. From Ann Arbor it’s about 50 minutes west on I-94, and from Jackson it’s about 30 minutes. Detroit-area families are usually here in about an hour and a half, so a Friday-evening arrival is easy.
