Here’s an honest look at what each does best.

A Corps of Engineers campground and a private campground are built for different trips. Mill Creek is about the big lake: boating, fishing and plenty of room. Planning notes from Recreation.gov: sites are reservation only (same-day reservations are possible), each site allows one RV and up to three sleeping units, check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m., and golf carts and fireworks aren’t permitted. The Corps also asks campers not to bring firewood from home because of the emerald ash borer. Check Recreation.gov for this season’s dates.

Who Ridge Ranch is best for

Ridge Ranch Campground in Newton Falls, just off I-80, is a family campground where the campground itself is the plan for the weekend.

  • Families with kids. Our 17-acre private lake has a new sand beach and the Wibit floating water park, open Thursday through Sunday until Labor Day for ages 7 and up (kids under 16 need a parent present, and the campground provides life jackets). The free Kangaroo Jumper and the arcade are a short walk away.
  • Weekend event fans. Most summer weekends bring food trucks and events at our Amish-built lakeside pavilion.
  • Golf cart owners and big rigs. Golf carts are welcome and can be charged on your site, and 50-amp pull-through sites make arrival easy.
  • Anglers who want it easy. No fishing license is needed on our private lake.
  • Dog owners. Up to four dogs per site and a fenced dog park.
  • Day-trippers. Nelson Ledges State Park is about 10 minutes away.

Our season runs May 1 to October 20. Rates vary by date and site type.

The main difference is scale. Berlin Lake gives you thousands of acres of water for a boat. Ridge Ranch gives you a smaller, calm lake with a beach and a water park the kids can walk to from the campsite.

Visiting both

At about 28 minutes apart, it’s easy to do both. Families camping with us can trailer a boat to Berlin Lake for a day on the water, then come back to the beach, the Wibit and a campfire. Bring an Ohio fishing license for Berlin Lake if you’re 16 or older.
