For quiet fall camping near Ann Arbor and Jackson, The Oaks Campground in Munith is about 50 minutes west of Ann Arbor and about 30 minutes from Jackson, on 155 wooded acres next to Waterloo Recreation Area. Late September and early October are the calmest weeks of our year: fewer people, rates that are often discounted, cool nights for campfires, and color coming into the trees along about 120 acres of trails. Our season ends October 20, so the fall window is short and worth planning for.

What is fall like at The Oaks?

Our team describes fall here as “a very peaceful, slower-paced environment” compared with summer. Once the Halloween weekend is over, most of the people in the park are seasonal campers enjoying their last weekends of the year, and weekend visitors have the trails nearly to themselves.

  • Color on the trails. Most of our trails run through forest, with some open grassland and wetland edges. A golf cart or bike ride through the wooded loops is the best way to see the leaves. As one campground employee put it, “the leaves are incredible that time of the year, with all the trails and forested area you can drive through.”
  • The older section. Sites 22 to 109 sit among the park’s old-growth trees, away from the store and beach. In fall that’s where the shade turns to color over your campsite.
  • Wildlife. Deer are easy to spot on the forest loops, and sandhill cranes come over from the neighboring Haehnle Bird Sanctuary to our marsh and grasslands.
  • Dark, clear nights. The Oaks is remote, with little light pollution, so cool fall nights are good for stars from anywhere in the park.

When do the leaves change near Ann Arbor and Jackson?

Southern Michigan colors later than the north. The northern Lower Peninsula usually peaks in early to mid-October, and the southern part of the state lights up later in the month, wrapping up around Halloween. Because our season ends October 20, a mid-October weekend at The Oaks usually means color building on the trails rather than the very last of the peak. Exact timing changes every year with the weather, so watch a fall color report before you book.

Can I camp at The Oaks in October?

The campground season runs May 1 to October 20. Short-term camping typically runs into late September or early October, and seasonal guests stay through the 20th. Check the booking system on The Oaks rates page for the last available nights this year.

Fall is also one of the best values of the season. We use dynamic pricing, so quieter dates, including October, are typically discounted below our base rate. Rates vary by date and site; see the rates page for yours.

The Halloween weekend

The Oaks hosts one Halloween weekend, held on the last weekend of September going forward: costume contests (including for dogs), crafts, trick-or-treating with the roads closed to traffic, and evening dance parties. In 2026 we built a haunted pavilion; the plan for future years is a haunted trail around the fishing pond. See The Oaks events page for dates.

A note on the cranes. Haehnle’s famous gathering of several thousand sandhill cranes peaks from late October to mid-November, in the hour before sunset, which is after our season closes. In September and October you’ll still see cranes on our property and at the sanctuary, and the numbers grow as fall goes on. You can’t take a golf cart from the campground into Haehnle, but you can hike to its back side from our trails; for the viewing area, drive out the front of the park and around a couple of corners to the public viewing area.

Tips for fall camping at The Oaks

  • Pack for cold nights. October nights in southern Michigan can drop near freezing. Bring layers and warm sleeping bags, especially in a tent.
  • Mind your power. Short-term RV sites have 50-amp service (seasonal sites are 30 amp). If you run an electric heater, balance it against your other appliances.
  • Plan a trails trip, not a beach trip. The water park is a summer feature. Fall is for campfires, golf cart rides and hikes.
  • Buy firewood at the store. Outside firewood isn’t allowed in Michigan, and we sell it at the camp store.
  • Golf carts off by dark. Days are shorter in fall, and golf carts don’t drive after dark at The Oaks, so plan color rides for the afternoon.
  • Tent campers: sites T7 to T12 are among our most wooded. See tent camping at The Oaks.
