Waterloo Recreation Area covers more than 20,000 acres between Jackson and Chelsea, with 11 inland lakes. Fishing at The Oaks between lake trips

If you’re camping at The Oaks, you have a lake at camp too. Our private fishing lake is stocked with bass, crappie, bluegill, carp and others, and gets far less pressure than the public lakes, which helps the fish grow big. The dock is the easy spot for kids, and the wooded back side is good for bank fishing. You can keep fish, though most guests release them, and the camp store sells bait. See fishing at The Oaks.

A common plan: fish our lake in the morning, then trailer the boat to Portage Lake for the evening bite. Seasonal campers can store a boat at The Oaks for free.

Before you go

  • License: a Michigan fishing license is required for anyone 17 or older on public waters. Kids under 17 fish free. A 2026 resident annual license is $26, and a one-day license is $10.
  • Clean, drain, dry: Michigan law requires you to remove plants from your boat and trailer and drain all water before moving between lakes.
  • Bait: throw leftover bait in the trash, not the lake.
  • Rules: state size and possession limits apply on every public lake. Check the current Michigan fishing regulations.

Paddlers should read bring your kayak: the fishing lake and Portage Lake. The Oaks is open May 1 to October 20. Rates vary by date and site; see The Oaks rates page to book your site. The campground is at 7800 Cutler Rd, Munith.
