If you’re searching for swimming lakes in Ohio, the swimming area at Ridge Ranch Campground in Newton Falls has been cooling off local families since the 1960s. Today it has a new sand beach, cool spring-fed water and a Wibit floating water park, and you don’t have to camp to enjoy it: beach day passes are available for day visitors.

A swimming hole with a long history

Ridge Ranch’s lake was dug out of marshy farm and ranch ground by the original builder, who spent many winters draining it and deepening the middle. It opened in the 1960s as a place for local families to swim on hot summer days, and it has been a swimming spot ever since.

What makes the water good for swimming?

  • Springs: several springs seep up through the shale bedrock into the swimming area, keeping the water cool and helping keep algae down.
  • Depth: the swimming area was dredged to 8 to 10 feet through most of it.
  • A separate swim area: a land bridge separates it from the main lake, which keeps the snapping turtles on the far shoreline away from swimmers.
  • Sand, not mud: for 2026 the beach ground was raised about 3 feet, covered with sand-barrier fabric and topped with more than 1,000 tons of sand that runs out into the water. There is a shallow area for kids that gets deeper farther out.

How do beach day passes work?

Day visitors buy a beach day pass for each person, plus parking. You can add a wristband for the Wibit floating water park on the days it is open. If you only want to visit friends at the park and skip the beach, there is a lower-cost park visitor pass. Current prices are posted on the Ridge Ranch rates page, and visitors check in at the store.

Who buys day passes? Seasonal campers’ friends and family, weekend campers’ guests, and families from nearby towns and cities who just want a beach day.

Beach hours and swimming rules

  • The beach is open 9 AM to 9 PM or sunset, whichever comes first.
  • There is no lifeguard. Kids under 13 must be with an adult when swimming.
  • Proper swim attire, please.
  • Pets are not allowed on the beach or in the lake.
  • The Wibit is for ages 7 and up, with campground-provided life jackets, and kids under 16 need a parent present.

Tips for a beach day

  • Arrive early on hot weekends. There are some lounge chairs at the beach, but they fill quickly, so bring your own chairs and an umbrella.
  • The shaded picnic area between the pavilion and the beach is a good place to set up and watch the kids.
  • Check the events page before you come for food trucks. Trucks usually show when scheduled but can cancel last minute, so call or text the office to confirm, or pack a lunch.
  • The store sells snacks, ice and hand-scooped ice cream.

Swimming holes in Ohio: what to expect here

Ridge Ranch is a private family campground, not a public swimming hole, so the beach is kept for registered campers and pass holders. That’s part of what keeps it comfortable: a new beach, renovated restrooms nearby, and a park limited to registered guests and visitors.
