Golf Cart Rules at The Oaks: Trail Rides, Rentals and E-Bikes

A golf cart is the best way to see The Oaks: about 120 acres of trails through forest and grassland, plus easy trips to the beach and the store for ice cream. Here’s how carts and e-bikes work, with the reason behind each rule. The complete posted rules are on our map page.

Golf cart and e-bike rules at The Oaks

Electric carts only

Electric golf carts are the only motorized vehicles allowed on our trails. Gas carts, ATVs, side-by-sides, minibikes and go-carts aren’t allowed anywhere in the park, and motorcycles may only enter and leave. Campground insurers don’t cover ATVs, and electric carts keep the trails quiet for wildlife.

Bringing your own cart

Short-term campers pay a $25 per night golf cart pass, show proof of golf cart liability insurance and sign a waiver when they register. We’ll give you a window sticker for the cart. The park carries its own costly insurance policy so guests can have carts, and the pass helps cover it. Your own insurance is still required, because both policies protect you and other guests.

Renting a cart

Rent a cart by the day at the store. Reserve ahead online or by phone, or ask when you arrive if any are left. Rates are dynamic like our sites, and multi-day rentals get a much better daily rate, because a one-day rental on a busy weekend can block a family who wanted a cart for three or four days. Tent campers can rent too.

Sharing the trails

Our trails are shared by hikers, dog walkers (dogs can be off leash on the back trails), mountain bikers and horseback day riders. Slow down on blind corners, give horses plenty of room and pass them slowly, and watch for deer and sandhill cranes crossing. Golf carts can’t get to Haehnle Sanctuary, but you can hike from our back trails to its back side; its public viewing area is a short drive out the front of the park.

5 mph, and park at dark

The speed limit is 5 mph everywhere for cars, RVs and golf carts, so a driver can always stop for a child on a bike. Carts park for the night at dark. Cart headlights shine straight into RV and tent windows, which wakes up kids and neighbors, and it’s harder to see bikes and walkers after dark. Finish trail rides before sunset.

E-bikes and mountain bikes

E-bikes are allowed for adults only, and only pedal-assist models. Kids can’t ride e-bikes, and throttle-only e-bikes aren’t permitted, because they behave like small motorcycles and have caused serious accidents at campgrounds around the country. Regular bikes are welcome for everyone, and mountain bikers can explore narrow single-track the carts don’t use. We don’t rent bikes, so bring your own.

Who can drive, and kids on bikes

Please follow the golf cart rules on your waiver and the posted park rules, and ask the office about driver requirements when you rent or register a cart. Kids and bikes are back at the site by dusk. Carts share roads and trails with kids, bikes and walkers, so a careful driver at 5 mph keeps everyone safe.

Seasonal campers and carts

Seasonal campers can keep an electric cart at The Oaks with their own golf cart insurance. There’s no seasonal golf cart fee at The Oaks yet. One may be added in the future to help cover trail upkeep and the park’s cart insurance.
