State parks vs a private campground
State parks and private campgrounds are funded and priced differently. Ohio’s state parks are paid for through camping fees and public investment, and they’re built around big lakes, trails and open land. A private campground like Ridge Ranch pays for its amenities, staff and utilities through the site rate, so it puts its effort into what you do at the campground. Neither is better across the board; they suit different trips.
- What’s on site. The state parks have the big lakes, long trails, boat launches and, at Punderson and Pymatuning, cabins and a lodge. Ridge Ranch has a 17-acre lake with a new sand beach, a spring-fed swim area with the Wibit, the Kangaroo Jumper, an arcade and events at our lakeside pavilion.
- Booking. State parks book through Reserve Ohio (reserveohio.com or 866-644-6727) up to six months ahead, with a two-night weekend minimum; our Reserve Ohio guide has the details. At Ridge Ranch you book with us, and the license-plate gate checks you in.
- Quiet hours. Ohio state park campgrounds observe quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Ours start at 11 p.m.
- Season. Mosquito Lake and Pymatuning offer limited winter camping, and Punderson’s cabins are open year-round. Ridge Ranch is open May 1 to October 20.
The day-use parks
Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park
Nelson-Kennedy Ledges is the most dramatic landscape in this part of Ohio, with short trails through and over tall sandstone ledges, crevices and waterfalls. There’s no camping in the park, and climbing and rappelling aren’t allowed, so stay on the marked trails. See our Nelson Ledges guide.
Lake Milton State Park
Lake Milton is a day-use park with a 600-foot beach (restrooms, showers, a playground and courts), more than 10 miles of mountain bike trails with a 4-mile loop option, an 18-hole disc golf course and reservable picnic shelters. There’s no campground in the park.

West Branch State Park
Near Ravenna, around the 2,650-acre Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir (unlimited horsepower, with a no-wake zone along the shore). It’s a trail park, with more than 19 miles of mountain bike trails, about 14 miles of hiking and nearly 20 miles of bridle trails. Mosquito Lake State Park
Near Cortland, on a 7,850-acre lake with a 600-foot beach and a 5-acre dog park with its own swim area. The pet-friendly campground has full-service, electric and non-electric sites, two yurts and a launch ramp just for campers. Compare Mosquito Lake and Ridge Ranch.
Punderson State Park
In Newbury, on the largest and deepest natural kettle lake in Ohio (paddle and electric motors only). It has Punderson Manor Lodge, 26 cabins, an 18-hole golf course and free 36-hole disc golf, plus a campground with full hookup, electric and non-electric sites. Compare Punderson and Ridge Ranch.
Pymatuning State Park
On the Ohio side of a 14,000-acre lake shared with Pennsylvania, with a 20-horsepower limit and well-known walleye and muskie fishing. The campground has its own beach, and the park rents cabins. Compare Pymatuning and Ridge Ranch.
Guilford Lake State Park
Near Lisbon, with a 396-acre lake and a small campground of shaded electric sites with its own campers’ beach. ODNR lists the lake at full drawdown for dam work as of March 2026, so check the park page before planning a trip.

Ridge Ranch Campground sits just off I-80 and the Ohio Turnpike in Newton Falls, about 10 minutes from Nelson-Kennedy Ledges and within about 25 minutes of West Branch, Mosquito Lake and Lake Milton.
