Walnut Hills Campsites: Every Site Type Compared
Walnut Hills has 201 RV sites, 2 camping cabins and 18 tent sites on 42 acres between a spring-fed swim lake and the Shiawassee River. The sites themselves are flat, with rolling hills and old-growth trees between them. This guide compares every type of site so you can pick the one that fits your family, then book it from the map.

50-amp full hookup (80 sites)
Best for: Big rigs, longer stays, groups who want full hookup

- 30/50 amp
- Hookups
- Sewer, water and electric
- Size
- Many sites 70–80 ft long; RVs up to 45 ft
- Setting
- Mostly wooded; all-day shade on many north-end sites
- Bathhouse
- Main bathhouse is closest to the north-end block (171–178, 186–193)
- Pets
- Leashed dogs welcome
Walnut Hills has 80 full-hookup sites with 50-amp service: sewer, water and electric right at the site. They’re the best fit for big rigs and newer RVs running two air conditioners. Many sites in the park are 70–80 feet long and fit RVs up to 45 feet.
The north-end block is our most popular full-hookup area for groups. Sites 186–193 back onto sites 171–178, close to the main bathhouse and across from the entertainment zone: Pavilion 2, the Kangaroo Jumper, the dog park, the gaga ball pit, the new playground and the ball field. Four tent sites with electric sit across the road, which is handy if someone in your group tents.
River frontage (27–42)
Best for: Paddlers and river lovers
- Power
- Electric; amperage varies by site (see the booking map)
- Hookups
- Varies by site
- Setting
- Right on the Shiawassee; trees throughout
- Pets
- Leashed dogs welcome; dogs can swim in the river
Sites 27–42 sit right on the Shiawassee River. If you’re nimble, you can launch a kayak or canoe straight from your site, depending on the water level (in low water there’s a bit of a drop to the river). These are premium sites, and trees run throughout this stretch.
Sites 1–26 are river view sites. They sit 10–25 feet above the river, so you can see the water but aren’t on it, and they cost less than frontage. Trees line the back of these lots, giving about half a day of shade. Dogs are welcome to swim in the river; many owners walk down to the boat launch area.
River view (1–26)
Best for: River scenery for less than frontage
- Power
- Varies by site
- Hookups

- Setting
- 10–25 ft above the river; about half-day shade
- Pets
- Leashed dogs welcome
Lakefront (104–117)
Best for: Families who want the beach and Wibit
- Power
- 30 amp
- Hookups
- Water and electric, no sewer
- Setting
- On the swim-lake beach; open and sunny
- Pets
- Leashed; no dogs on the beach or in the swim lake
The lakefront sites line the beach on our spring-fed swim lake, steps from the Wibit, the store and the beach. They have water and 30-amp electric, with no sewer. This end of the park has sandy soil, so the sites are open and sunny rather than shaded. Lakefront sites are in high demand, so they’re priced a little higher. Sites 101–103 are premium lakefront seasonal sites.
Back fence line (74 to 170B)
Best for: Quiet mornings and wildlife
- Power
- 30/50 amp
- Hookups
- Full hookup
- Size
- Some large lots
- Setting
- No rear neighbors; old-growth trees and a farm field behind
- Pets
- Leashed dogs welcome
The row along the back fence line is where guests go for quiet. There’s nobody behind you: just a band of old-growth trees about 30 feet deep, and beyond it a neighbor’s farm field where deer graze most mornings. These sites are full hookup with 30/50-amp service, and the larger lots in the row are premium. It’s a favorite spot for morning coffee.
The circle (118–131)
Best for: Groups and family reunions
- Power
- 30 amp
- Hookups
- Water and electric at the back of each site, no sewer
- Size
- Long and fairly wide
- Setting
- Open and sunny, across the road from the beach
- Pets
- Leashed dogs welcome
The loop of sites 118–131, across the road from the beach, is famous for “circling the wagons.” The sites are long and fairly wide, with water and 30-amp electric at the back of each site and no sewer. That layout lets a group park sideways at the front of their sites and form a ring of RVs around a big open middle for shared campfires. On most full-hookup sites, parking sideways would block the hookups, so this loop is the place to do it.
Families on different budgets often book a few lakefront sites plus a block of circle sites so everyone can be together. Groups that book 25 or more sites get one day of free pavilion rental.
Pull-throughs (118, 47–51)
Best for: One-night stopovers
- Power
- Electric
- Hookups
- Water and electric
- Size
- Pull-through
- Setting
- Sites 47–51 have trees throughout
- Pets
- Leashed dogs welcome
Site 118 and sites 47–51 are pull-throughs with water and electric. They’re meant for one-night stopovers, which is why they aren’t full hookup. Plenty of travelers who stop for a night end up wishing they’d stayed longer.
Camping cabins (43, 46)
Best for: Grandparents and non-campers
- Power
- Lights and air conditioning
- Hookups
- No plumbing
- Size
- One room, sleeps 4
- Setting
- Shaded south-end section
- Bathhouse
- Cabin 46: short walk to the main bathhouse; cabin 43: a little farther
- Pets
- No pets in the cabins
Our two camping cabins are one-room cabins with lights, air conditioning, a table, a fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker. Each has a twin-over-twin bunk bed and a double bed, so it sleeps four, plus a small front porch, a fire ring and a picnic table. There’s no plumbing: cabin 46 is a short walk to the main bathhouse (privies are even closer), and cabin 43 is a slightly longer walk. Bring your own sheets and bedding. There’s a $75 cleaning deposit at check-in, refunded when you leave the cabin clean. Pets aren’t allowed in the cabins. Cabins fill fastest on holiday weekends, so book those early.
Tent sites (18)
Best for: Families trying camping, budget weekends
- Power
- 4 sites with electric; the rest primitive
- Hookups
- None at primitive sites
- Size
- Room for a family tent
- Bathhouse
- The 4 electric sites are near the main bathhouse
- Pets
- Leashed dogs welcome
Walnut Hills has 18 tent sites. Four have electric, near the main bathhouse and across the road from sites 186–193; the rest are primitive, with a picnic table and fire pit. Tent campers get the same beach, Wibit, events and amenities as everyone else (standard Wibit fees apply on paid days).
Shade and sun
Most of the park is wooded: sites 1–105 and 132–193. The north end has trees throughout the sites and all-day shade on many of them. On the south end, trees mostly line the back of the lots (about half-day shade) on sites 1–25 and 137–150, while sites 27–51 have trees throughout. The sunny sites are by the swim lake (106–131) and sites 132–136.

Questions
Which Walnut Hills sites have 50-amp full hookups?
80 sites have full hookups with 50-amp service, including the north-end block (171–178 and 186–193) and many sites along the back fence line (74 to 170B). The booking map shows the hookups for each site.
Can a big rig fit at Walnut Hills?
Yes. Many sites are 70–80 feet long and take RVs up to 45 feet, and the 50-amp full-hookup sites suit big rigs best. When you arrive, drive straight toward the gate rather than turning right into the car parking lot.
Which sites are closest to the beach and the Wibit?
The lakefront sites (104–117) sit along the beach, and the circle (118–131) is just across the road. Both are a short walk to the beach, the Wibit and the store.
Which sites are the quietest?
The back fence line (74 to 170B). There’s no one behind you, just a band of old-growth trees and a farm field where deer graze most mornings.
Can I choose my exact site?
Yes. You pick a specific site from the park map when you book online, and the price shown is for that site and those dates. If you’d like help choosing, call us at 989-634-9782.
Do the camping cabins have a bathroom?
No. The cabins have no plumbing. Cabin 46 is a short walk to the main bathhouse, with privies even closer, and cabin 43 is a slightly longer walk.
