Labor Day Camping at Walnut Hills: Food Trucks, Corn Hole and a DJ
Labor Day weekend at Walnut Hills is the last big summer weekend of the year: food trucks all three days, tie-dye, corn hole and a Saturday night DJ dance party. Find this year’s dates on the Walnut Hills events page.
What a typical Labor Day weekend looks like
Last season’s schedule shows the shape of the weekend.
Saturday daytime
- A food truck on site (The Filling Station last season)
- 11 AM Halloween craft, a first look at fall
- Noon tie-dye
- 2 PM corn hole
The Halloween craft is a nod to what’s coming: our Halloween weekends start a couple of weeks later.
Saturday night
The DJ dance party runs from 7 to 10 PM at the pavilion. It’s the last big summer dance of the season, and it draws a crowd. Kids dance up front while parents catch up with neighbors they’ve camped beside all summer.
Sunday: a slower day
A food truck is back on Sunday, so nobody has to cook. Many families spend the day on the water: the Wibit and the beach on the spring-fed lake, or a float on the Shiawassee River with Cheff’s Canoe Rental. River levels late in summer depend on that year’s rainfall, so check with Cheff’s before you plan a float.
Monday: breakfast and pack-up
A breakfast food truck comes in on Monday morning, so you can pack up without cooking. Check-out is 11 AM. If your site is open after you, late check-out until 5 PM is available for a flat fee, which buys one more afternoon by the lake.
Book early, or look at the weekends around it
Labor Day weekend fills early, so book as soon as you can. Holiday dates are priced higher than ordinary weekends. If you’re flexible, the weekends just before and just after Labor Day are among the lower-priced weekends of the season, with the same campground and still-warm weather. Choose your dates on the Walnut Hills rates page to compare.

What comes after Labor Day
The season doesn’t end with Labor Day. Walnut Hills is open until October 20, and September brings the first of our three Halloween weekends, with the haunted trail and trick-or-treating. If you’re planning a river trip, our Shiawassee River camping and kayaking guide covers the float options.
Good to know before you come
- Quiet hours run 11 PM to 8 AM, and golf carts park for the night at dark.
- Kids and bikes are back at the site by dusk.
- Outside firewood isn’t allowed in Michigan, so pick up firewood at the camp store.
- Visitors register at the store and leave by 10:30 PM on weekends.
Getting to Walnut Hills
Walnut Hills sits just outside Durand, off I-69. It’s about 40 minutes from Flint, about 50 minutes from Lansing and about an hour and 45 minutes from Detroit, so you can leave after work on Friday and still have the fire going before dark. There’s no office check-in: your license plate opens the gate, and if you’re arriving after hours, call the store to pre-check in.
